Midwest Recruiting Report
Arike Ogunbowale and Tori McCoy represented the Midwest well in Colorado Springs
Well many people were enjoying their Memorial Day Weekend and having BBQ's with the family, 124 talented prospects were at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado Thursday through Monday trying to make the 12-member roster for the 2013 USA Basketball Women's U16 National Team.
The Midwest was represented by several highly touted prospects: Arike Ogunbowale of Divine Savior Holy Angels in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Tori McCoy of The H.S. of St. Thomas More in Champaign, Illinois, Faith Suggs of Plainfield East H.S. in Flossmoor, Illinois, Teniya Page of Marian Catholic H.S. in Chicago Heights, Illinois, Nicole Ekhomu of Joliet Catholic Academy in Joliet, Illinois, Kysre Gondrezick of Benton Harbor H.S. in Benton Harbor, Michigan. Tyasha Harris of Heritage Christian in Indianapolis, Indiana, Sydney Shelton of Mount Vernon H.S. in Fortville, Indiana, and seventh grader Katlyn Gilbert of Heritage Christian in Indianapolis, Indiana (committed to Evansville).
Though all nine prospects put on a good show during the trials, it was 5'9 guard Arike Ogunbowale and 6'4 forward Tori McCoy that had their numbers called Monday morning when the 12-member roster was released.
"It's such an honor to represent your country in this way, and go out there and play for them. It's been a dream of mine just watching all my idols play for USA, and now I finally get to do that. It's just amazing," said Ogunbowale.
"It feels pretty great, because I never thought in my life that I would actually be here playing for the USA team. So, it's pretty cool that I'm actually wearing their jersey and being a part of their athletics and everything," said McCoy.
Ogunbowale and McCoy will get the opportunity to begin showing the impact they can have on this star-studded 2013 USA Women's U16 National Team when they reassemble for training camp June 10-16 at the USOTC prior to the team's departure for the 2013 FIBA Americas U16 Championship, which will be played June 19-23 in Cancun, Mexico.
The other ten players named to the team were: DeJanae Boykin (Charles H. Flowers H.S./Springdale, Md.); Kalani Brown (Salmen H.S./Slidell, La.); Chassity Carter (Dickson County H.S./Dickson, Tenn.); Lauren Cox (Flower Mound H.S./Flower Mound, Texas); Crystal Dangerfield (Blackman H.S./Murfreesboro, Tenn); Chelsea Dungee (Preston Public School/Okmulgee, Okla.); Asia Durr (St. Pius X Catholic H.S./Douglasville, Ga.); Sabrina Ionescu (Miramonte H.S./Walnut Creek, Calif.); Taylor Murray (Annapolis Area Christian School/Odenton, Md.); and Katie Lou Samuelson (Mater Dei H.S./Huntington Beach, Calif.).
